Noticing dark circles, bags, or puffiness underneath your eyes? You’re not alone. While these concerns are often associated with being tired, not getting enough sleep, or simply getting older, there are many other reasons why dark circles might occur.
Common, yet frustrating, dark circles can appear for reasons beyond your control. Genetics actually plays a major role in determining whether or not you’re prone to them. However, if you simply prefer a more natural approach, here are some of my favorite DIY treatments for getting rid of under-eye bags.
Aloe Vera. This wonderfully versatile plant is packed with benefits for your skin. It contains a compound called aloesin, which helps to lighten hyperpigmentation, so using aloe vera as a way to treat dark circles can be quite effective. According to research, the best results occurred when applying aloe vera to affected areas up to 4 times a day for at least 2 weeks
Cucumber. Applying thin, chilled, cucumber slices directly on the eyes for 10-15 minutes a few times a week can aid in reducing the appearance of puffiness. Cucumbers contain water and high levels of vitamin K, which can help to hydrate the area around the eyes, as well as provide natural lightening to dark spots. For these reasons, eating cucumbers can be just as, if not more, beneficial as topically applying them to the eyes.
Good diet. Many foods you already buy contain powerful ingredients that can help protect the skin against dark circles and puffiness. Incorporating them into your diet regularly can have a tremendous effect on the skin and your overall health. Blueberries, for example, are a well-known antioxidant, rich in vitamins K, C, and manganese, which promote circulation around the eyes and protect the blood vessels.
DIY Facial Masks. There are many natural ingredients you may already have at home, which you can combine to make a seriously soothing face mask that will do wonders for your skin. Popular ingredients for dark circles include honey, lemon, and turmeric.
Tea Bags. Using tea bags on the eyes is a popular home remedy for dark spots, puffiness, redness, and irritation around the eyes. It’s a cost-effective way to treat skin concerns, as well as one you can safely use as often as you need. The best teas for dark circles include organic green and black teas for their caffeine and antioxidant content, while herbal teas are more soothing to the skin and can help reduce puffiness. To use on eyes, prepare tea bags just as you would for a cup of tea by steeping them in hot water. Squeeze out the excess liquid, and place bags directly on your closed eyes for up to 30 minutes. You can also chill the tea bags in the fridge first for a cooling experience.
