These 7 Yoga Poses Can Help Heal Back Pain

Pain in the lower back area is an incredibly common ailment. Lower back pain also affects roughly one third of adults between 65-74, and typical treatment of back pain may include physical therapy, surgery and maybe medication, but did you know that yoga may also be beneficial?

According to a year-long study discussed by the National Institute for Health (NIH), yoga may just be as effective as physical therapy for treating low back pain. Yoga’s focus on balance and steadiness encourages your body to develop defenses against the causes of back pain, which include weak abdominal and pelvic muscles, as well lack of flexibility in the hips.

You'll find that when you strengthen these muscles, you improve your posture, which reduces the load on your back, and thus reduces the aches you feel. In addition, stretching can increase flexibility by increasing blood flow to tight muscles.

A yoga class specifically designed to address back pain may be an alternative to physical therapy for easing pain in people with low back pain.

With this clear evidence that yoga is beneficial for our health and wellbeing, it's probably time we all gave it a try.

If still on the fence, it's worth discussing openly with your doctor, and on your doctors green light, here are a few soothing poses you can try
