5 Tips To Avoid Acne (Maskne) While Wearing A Mask
After almost a year of mask-wearing, the fatigue is real. However, masks are not going anywhere and we may as well get used to them being a permanent accessory, at least for a while. Masks have come a long way since March of last year. We now have mask chains, bedazzled masks, and pretty much every color/style/fabric available for your choosing. While the design and style of masks have improved over time, maskne (acne from wearing a mask) is still an ongoing issue. Do not fear, we have five tips to help keep your covered skin clear!
Change and wash your masks regularly. One of the best ways to protect your skin from unwanted breakouts is to ensure that the mask you are using is clean. If you are using disposable masks, changing them throughout the day can reduce dirt and oils that may build up on your face. Keeping your mask clean will help keep your face clear of blemishes and maintain healthy skin.
Wash your face regularly. Cleanliness is a big theme here. You should already be washing your face twice a day (AM & PM) but it’s more important than ever while you’re wearing a mask. If you have to wear a mask for a prolonged period of time, it’s best to wash your face as soon as you can after removing the mask.
Choose the right mask. Make sure your mask fits snugly, but not too tight, has two or more layers of fabric, and is made of natural, soft fabric, like cotton. If you choose to wear disposable masks, that’s fine too.
Apply moisturizer before wearing a mask. If your skin tends to be dry, a mask may cause irritation. Applying a non-comedogenic moisturizer can help hydrate your skin. A moisturizer can also serve as a barrier between your skin and the mask.
Use a soothing facial spray. One of my favorite discoveries in 2020 was a fantastic facial mist by Tower 28 Beauty. The SOS Daily Rescue Spray only has three ingredients, with the star being Hypochlorous Acid, which supports and nurtures your body to diminish the appearance of redness and bad bacteria. I spray this on my face immediately after removing my mask (I have a travel size for my purse and a larger size at home.) It immediately calms and soothes my skin.
