Do I Really Need An Eye Cream?

We’ve heard it before. Eye creams are just more expensive moisturizers in a smaller package right? Not necessarily.

Eye creams are actually formulated specifically for the delicate skin around the eye, so they tend to be thicker. They contain more oil than a regular face lotion, and have a lot of active ingredients aimed at the problems we see around the eyes like fine lines and wrinkles caused by sun damage and less collagen.

Collagen is what helps maintain skin’s elasticity, and as you age, your skin makes less of collagen. Eye creams with ingredients like vitamin c, peptides and retinol help to boost collagen production, and as the skin around the eyes is fragile, and more prone to dryness, it is quicker to show age and fatigue. Squinting and constant movement of the eyes hasten the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and fluids collect under the eyes and cause puffiness and dark circles, that eye cream can also help address.

Some eye creams are light, non-greasy and fast-penetrating, while others are rich and intensely moisturizing. If your existing face cream is working well for you, then an eye cream is a “nice to have” – but not a must-have. If you like the texture and you’re getting the desired results without irritation, then there’s no reason your moisturizer can’t be applied all over your face, including your eye area.

So are eye creams just more expensive moisturizers? You be the judge.
