Make Your Own Lipstick in 4 Easy Steps - DIY

Have you ever looked at what ingredients are in lipstick or any other beauty product? Sometimes, It's actually not as complicated to re-create as you might think! I learned how to make lipstick myself in effort to curb an obsession I had with them, and now I pass the torch to you.

This should be fun!

First off, you'll need to gather the necessary base ingredients and other items.

  • 1 teaspoons of coconut or almond oil

  • 1 teaspoons of shea or cocoa butter

  • 1-2 teaspoons of beeswax

  • 1-3 drops of an essential oil (optional)

  • Coloring ( e.g natural food coloring, turmeric, cinnamon powder, beet powder, mica powder, cacao powder)

Other Items:

  • Lipstick containers

  • A funnel

  • Oven mitts

  • Double boiler

  • Wooden spoon (for stirring the mixture in step 3 and 4)

Now because of the various kinds of combination you would need for the base of your lipstick, the quantities below are to show the general quantity ratio of ingredients to each other. This can be more or less, depending on how much lipstick you want to make.

Making The Lipstick

Pick out color add-ins. This is another place where you can be more spontaneous with how you go about making lipstick. There are quite a few items that you can use for coloring, many of which you likely have in your kitchen. Below are just a few examples of items you can use either by themselves or in combination with others. If you have the time or desire, it can be fun to play around with different mixtures to see what colors you can make.

Combine the base ingredients. Now, you will want to set your stove to medium heat and either grab or make a double boiler to be placed on it. Next, grab the base ingredients (coconut oil, beeswax, and shea or cocoa butter) and stir them together in the double boiler. This mixture will not take long to melt, so make sure you are keeping an eye on it.

Mix in the chosen color add-ins. Once all of the base ingredients have turned to liquid, it is time to combine the color materials to the mix. To do this you should first remove the mixture from the heat and set it down somewhere safe. If you have decided to use an essential oil for scent, now would be the time to add it in as well.

Pour mixture into lipstick containers and let cool. After everything has been combined, it is time to grab a funnel and pour the concoction into your container(s). Afterwards, the last thing you need to do is allow the lipstick to cool. Once it has cooled down and hardened completely, your lipstick is ready!
