Natural Remedies for Stubborn Dark Spots.



Dark spots or hyper-pigmentation are due to the overproduction of melanin in the skin by melanocytes. This extra melanin can be triggered by a lot of different things - Hormones—both estrogen and progesterone—can increase the level of melanin—which is why pregnant women see dark spots that often lighten following birth; the sun can increase the level of melanin—which is why we have more dark spots after the summer; and age can increase the size of the melanocytes—which is why we see dark age spots in older people.


Dark spots can happen to anyone, and while knowing what causes them, is the first step to going about getting rid of them, many of methods require you to thin-out your wallet on expensive skincare products. Luckily, we have compiled a list of natural remedies for stubborn dark spots that are simpler, and more affordable, than most other options.


Papaya


This beautiful orange-green fruit is one of the most highly recommended natural remedies for getting rid of dark spots. Papayas are packed full of alpha-hydroxy acids which are often used in exfoliants and other skin-care products. They worry away the top few layers of skin cells by weakening the bond that holds them together. As a result, old dead skin cells are removed and replaced by new healthy ones. These new cells look brighter and more radiant than the old ones, giving your skin a more even appearance.


Aloe


There are instances where dark spots appear as a result of scarring rather than hyper-pigmentation. When this is the case, aloe is a fantastic resource for treating them. Studies suggest that aloe works well for dark spots because it contains certain chemicals that have skin-lightening properties. They also have properties that help prevent the over production of melanin cells; a main cause of dark spots.


Turmeric


This delicious spice contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that are both great for using in food as well as on your skin. These two components provide a whole bunch of benefits for people, ranging from healing wounds to treating dermatological conditions, including dark spots. When applied to skin, turmeric helps to reduce inflammation, clear away dead cells, and bring out your skin’s natural glow.


Apple Cider Vinegar


Like papayas, apple cider vinegar contains specific acids that can help to lighten skin, making it a great remedy for dark spots. The acid, malic acid in particular, works similarly to how alpha-hydroxy acid works. A small difference between them is that malic acid promotes cell turnover, which washes away dead cells and, as a bonus, opens up pores. So not only can you even your skin tone, but you can reduce any acne you may have in the process too!
