We tend to think of acne as a problem for teenagers, but that is not always the case. Acne occurs well into our 20’s, 30’s, and even 40’s and is often more common in women than in men. So why does this annoying skin condition plague many of us post-teen years? The answer is likely a combination of stress, dietary factors and changing hormones – more than what we’ve had enough of the last few years, but not to fear, Saint Eden has some helpful ways to keep adult acne at bay.

Tip #1

If your acne is mainly located on the lower part of your face, along your jawline and neck, chances are high that hormones are the culprit. There are a variety of options to help – the most popular being oral contraceptives and a medication called Spironolactone that can be prescribed by your dermatologist. If you’re looking for natural alternatives, we recommend products with tea tree oil. Tea Tree Oil is a traditional medicine that has been used by native Aborigines for centuries. When applied topically, it’s healing to the skin, and can treat blackheads, whiteheads, blemishes, and inflammatory acne – Yes! even those big, red, angry pimples. It reduces the number of acne lesions as well as the severity of these lesions.

Tip #2

Another major adult acne offender is dairy, which is heavy in hormones. Foods with a high glycemic index, such as packaged pasta, rice, and bread can also contribute to acne flare-ups. Let’s not forget sugar – you guessed it, another culprit. Try limiting your dairy and sugar intake for clearer, blemish-free skin.

Tip #3

It’ll come as no surprise that stress can cause acne. Stress triggers hormonal changes that may worsen acne in people already prone to pimples. It increases the production of a hormone called cortisol, which escalates the production of sebum, a protective, oily substance naturally produced by glands near skin. Improving your acne, no matter the type or cause starts with a dedicated daily skincare routine.

If stress is a contributing factor, reducing your levels may be a good first step. Recognize and remain mindful of when you are most likely to get stressed so that you can come up with preventative strategies. We know it’s not always easy to find your inner zen, but your skin will thank you for trying.
